Mah Jongg Mavens
“Mah Jongg” is a Chinese word that literally
means “sparrows.” It is said that the clacking of
tiles during shuffling resembles the chattering
of sparrows as they squabble over food crumbs.
Mah Jongg was developed in China in the 19th
century and introduced into the U.S. as
American Mah Jongg in the 1920s. And then
Karen Croxton brought it to Jardineros in 2019
as the Interest Group Mah Jongg Mavens.
Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and
calculation, with a little bit of luck thrown in.
The Mah Jongg Mavens meet every Tuesday
from 1-4:30 pm at the Placitas Community
Senior Center.
